Medical Student Education:

Enhancing Medical Student Learning

An interesting study was conducted recently regarding having experienced educators "attend" a workshop versus having them "read" a brief lesson that succinctly provided information on using presentation software. The findings showed that for a busy professional, a brief written lesson was just as effective for improvement of instruction as taking time to attend a workshop. With this concept in mind, the following short written lessons have been designed for you. The topics were selected based on inquiries from faculty and feedback from students:

Series I:
  • Lesson1: Using Presentation Software
  • Just little changes can make a big difference for the learner!

  • Lesson 2: Writing Lecture Objectives
  • Objectives serve as guides for the educational experience. For the lecturer, they indicate what areas should be covered in the lecture(s) and what topics should be included in a test. For the student, it indicates what topics are most important to study for a test.

  • Lesson 3: Designing Scoring Rubrics
  • It is discouraging to be told that "you didn't do well" and not know how to improve. Scoring rubics provide clear statements about a student's strengths and areas needing improvement.

  • Lesson 4: Preparation of a Lecture Handout
  • This lesson provides a description of the contents that should be included in a lecture handout.

  • Lesson 5: Facilitating Small Group Learning
  • This short lesson provides methodology for conducting effective small groups at Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
