Dr. Childers was born on May 8, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to eastern Kentucky, and worked on a farm together. Dr. Childers developed his work ethic on the farm. "We rested when the work was done," says Dr. Childers. His lifelong dream was to become a physician. To obtain this goal, Dr. Childers attended Kentucky University and graduated cum laude in 1983. Upon graduation he attended Harvard University and was fortunate to become acquainted with Dr. Robert M. Goldwyn who influenced his life. Dr. Childers graduated from the University Louisville School of Medicine in 1989 and received the Physicians and Arts Award. Dr. Childers was accepted into the plastic surgery training program at Loma Linda University Medical Center in 1993. During his medical career, Dr. Childers has been very productive in his research efforts which have resulted in 10 publications and 35 presentations. He was awarded the Best Resident Paper at the annual Tri-County Surgical Society meeting in 1995. In 1993, during his first plastic surgery rotation at Loma Linda University, Ben met Ms. Ellyn Dennis, RN, and the two were married in July of 1994. Ellyn has been very supportive and an inspiration to Dr. Childers and the pursuits of his career. In addition, Dr. Childers made two trips to Montemorales, Mexico. There he had the opportunity to serve as a missionary surgeon to people with congenital and acquired deformities. Dr. Childers was accepted into a hand and microsurgical fellowship at Harvard Medical School-Beth Israel Hospital, under the tutelage of Joseph Upton, MD. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Childers joined the Loma Linda University, Division of Plastic Surgery as a full-time faculty member in September 1997. In June 2004, he left the division of plastic surgery and set-up a private practice in Riverside, California. |
