Jonathan Robert Freed, MD

Freed

Dr. Freed was born on August 31, 1964, in Loma Linda, California, while his father was in residency. His family subsequently moved to Sacramento where Dr. Freed was influenced not only by his immediate family, but also by his great-grandfather, Dr. Harry Miller, one of the first missionaries to mainland China. Thus he developed a strong desire to make the medical field his career choice at an early age. Dr. Freed attended Pacific Union College for three years as an undergraduate student. His desire was to continue the family tradition of missionary work, and he became a student missionary in South Korea, where he taught English and religion as the director of the English Language Institute in Seoul. He was accepted into Loma Linda University School of Medicine and graduated in 1990. Dr. Freed completed his prerequisite general surgery training and began his plastic surgery residency program in 1993.

Dr. Freed is very active in international missionary service. During medical school, he founded the SIMS Quarterly (Students In Missionary Service) in 1986 and was elected president in 1987. In addition, he initiated and directed monthly medical trips to various rural cities in Mexico during his medical school years (1988-1991). During his senior year of medical school, Dr. Freed spent a portion of his elective time in Kenya and Zambia on missionary work. His further overseas travels culminated in an international trip to India in February 1996. He had the opportunity to perform multiple plastic surgery procedures to restore hand flexion in lepers and reconstructed various deformities secondary to burn and ablative surgery. Dr. Freed was academically active and presented numerous papers to the California Society of Plastic Surgeons, Tri-County Surgical Society, and the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

During his general surgery residency, Dr. Freed met Ms. Chelle Winn (occupational therapist-neonatal specialist). The two were married on March 27, 1994, during his plastic surgery residency. Chelle has been very supportive of all his international missionary interests. They were blessed with the arrival of their son, Spencer Jonathan, on June 1, 1996.

After completion of his plastic and reconstructive surgery training, Dr. Freed moved to Portland, Oregon where he  accepted a position and was asked to establish a plastic surgery department within the Kaiser Foundation Medical System.
