Born in South Africa in September, 1965, Dr. Place emigrated with her parents and brother to the San Francisco Bay Area. During high school, Dr. Place became first interested in veterinary medicine, then surgery, and eventually plastic surgery.
She began her undergraduate studies at Saint Mary's College, San Francisco, California. She received a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry, graduating cum laude in 1986. In 1986, Dr. Place was accepted to Baylor College of medicine in Houston, Texas and received her medical degree in 1990. She completed her surgical internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Subsequently, she was accepted into the general surgery residency program at Loma Linda University prior to starting the plastic surgery residency program in 1994.
Dr. Place has always had a strong interest in research and became involved in several projects during medical school. She continued with research interests in general and plastic surgery with 24 presentations, 9 poster presentations, 19 publications of papers and abstracts, and a chapter in Grabb and Smiths Plastic Surgery (1997 edition).
Following the completion of her plastic surgery residency training, Dr. Place accepted a faculty position at Washington University School of Medicine, Division of Plastic Surgery.
