Camp Good Grief helps heal children's hearts
Editor's Note: To help the siblings of children
who have died at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital, the child
life and nursing staffs have implemented Camp Good Grief. This three-day
camp is designed to help siblings understand and express the loss of their
brother or/and sister with other kids their age who have had the same
experience. Sponsored by the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital
Foundation, the camp provides children with activities such as archery,
swimming, campfires, crafts, and confidential group time to discuss their
thoughts and feelings.Dear Leslie,

Dear Leslie, (Leslie Young is the director of the child life program at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital)
I have been meaning to write you a note and thank you for all you did for the girls at Camp Good Grief! I, as well as Tim, could tell the girls benefitted greatly from the camp. They talked constantly about the experience, as well as narrated to us about all the activities they got to experience there. The fact that they were around other kids that experienced the same type of loss, I think, gave them a new perspective. They were able to see that there are other kids that have lost siblings and, therefore, they are not alone.
You and all the Child Life Specialists at Loma Linda have played a very important, if not essential, role in Annie, Sarah, and Jannae's grief process and road to healing. God knew what He was doing when He placed you in our lives. Thank you so much for identifying the need for grief counseling and support to siblings of children with cancer.
We will always remember the time at Loma Linda with bitter-sweet memories wrapped up in love by you and the staff. You are doing a great job of caring for kids with cancer and their families. Keep it up!
