Cherrie Rembolt was worn out. A full-time high school counselor and health teacher who was also completing a second master's program, she didn't have time for the exhaustion that dialysis was causing her body. Cherrie and her doctor agreed: It was time to find a better alternative. When Cherrie's doctor recommended Loma Linda University Medical Center's transplantation program, she knew she would be in good hands. "When I attended a meeting about the transplantation program, I saw for myself that this team was very committed," says Cherrie. "I felt this was the way I needed to go." After completing necessary papers, Cherrie began the wait for a kidney. Nine months later, on December 20, 1996, the phone rang. Good news--they had a donor. Rushing to the Medical Center, Cherrie was ecstatic. Her new kidney and a healthy life awaited. "I can't say enough good things about the quality of care I received at Loma Linda," says Cherrie. "It was apparent there was a spirit of commitment to God guiding these people. They fed me both professionally and spiritually." So when Charlie Stone, the brother of two of Cherrie's students, survived a plane crash, she felt relieved to know he would be transferred to Loma Linda for inpatient rehabilitation. "I knew he would receive the best possible medical care at Loma Linda." Cherrie, who admired the Stone family for their commitment to the school, each other, and their beliefs, decided she would be a part of Charlie's recovery. Following his return home, Cherrie began assisting Charlie with physical therapy. "Each week I work with Charlie to help him gain upper body strength and movement by using weights and different exercises. It is a meaningful experience for me to support him in his recovery." In a way, Cherrie finds that helping Charlie is also a way she can reflect the compassionate care she received at Loma Linda during her transplant. "I love to give back," says Cherrie. "I am thankful to Loma Linda for taking great care of Charlie, and I thank them for giving me my health back."
