Renowned pioneer of infant heart transplantation Leonard L. Bailey, MD, received the Shirley N. Pettis Award at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital Foundation's Seventh Annual Gala on February 6. The award is presented annually for distinguished and outstanding service in improving the lives of children. Fifteen years ago, Dr. Bailey performed the world's first successful infant-to-infant heart transplant at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Since then, his ongoing vision to defy the deaths of otherwise perfect babies born with congenital heart defects has resulted in nearly 350 lives saved. "It is a thrill to see these children grow," says Dr. Bailey. "Each one is like a little miracle."
