In the previous issue of Expressions, we printed a story on the use of proton therapy to treat macular degeneration. The statistics given misstated the success rate for this procedure. Here is the correct information: Since 1994 the Proton Treatment Center has treated more than 250 people diagnosed with wet macular degeneration. This disorder causes severe and rapid vision loss when abnormal blood vessels form at the back of the eye, leak fluid that distorts vision, and form lesions or dense scar tissue on the macula. Proton therapy has been effective in stopping leakage in 90 percent of those treated. Less than five percent of those treated with protons have suffered a relapse of the disease.
