Left untreated, diabetes can affect eyes, kidneys, and blood pressure. It can be devastating for an average person, but even more so for women who are pregnant or hope to become pregnant. Babies born to untreated diabetic mothers often suffer from birth defects of the heart, spine, pulmonary system, and other organs. Celebrating 15 years of healthy babies born to diabetic mothers, the Sweet Success program at Loma Linda University Medical Center has helped hundreds of mothers avoid the tragic effects untreated diabetes can have on their children. While in the program, clients learn to check their blood sugar, determine the appropriate use of insulin, and are informed of the consequences of a high blood sugar level for both mothers and their unborn infants. Dietitians also assist clients in developing daily meal plans.
