The mission of Loma Linda University Medical Center is to continue the
healing ministry of Jesus Christ, "to make man whole," in a
setting of advancing medical science and to provide a stimulating clinical
and research environment for the education of physicians, nurses, and
other health professionals.
Richard Willey of Scottsdale, Arizona, was undergoing proton therapy for
prostate cancer at Loma Linda University Medical Center where he met another
patient who related a remarkable story that Mr. Willey loves to share.
When this gentleman learned he had cancer, he broke down and cried. He
could not speak to his friends about his cancer without ending in tears.
The man learned of the Proton Treatment Center and called Loma Linda to
find out more. As he began explaining his situation to Cathy Loop, a proton
referral representative, he again started crying uncontrollably.
Cathy told him to take a deep breath and slowly exhale. Once the gentleman
regained his composure, she asked him if she could pray with him.
"We prayed together right then and there," the man told Mr.
Willey, "and from that moment on, a calm came over me that has never
gone away. I thought, 'If this is the way they treat people at Loma Linda
University Medical Center, I have no reason to go anywhere else.'"
