February 18, 1999 Loma Linda's SAFE KIDS Coalition responds to national study on car seat misuse As part of Buckle Up For Love: Child Passenger Safety Week, and in response to a National SAFE KIDS Campaign study regarding car seat misuse in America, the local SAFE KIDS Coalition at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital would like to make educational materials available regarding proper car seat use. The nationwide study revealed that 85 percent of parents and caregivers install and use car seats incorrectly, leaving their children at serious risk in the event of a crash. In order to help parents in the Inland Empire transport their children in safety, the Loma Linda SAFE KIDS Coalition is offering a pamphlet in English and Spanish that gives instructions on proper use of car seats, booster seats and seat belts. The coalition also offers a car seat education program and community education for parents and children on proper car seat use and how to ride safely in a car. SAFE KIDS is the only organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury--the number one killer of children ages 14 and under. For more information on SAFE KIDS educational materials, call 1-800-825-KIDS (5437). # # # Contact: Kimberley Jeske Kuzma, Community Relations, (909) 558-4419
