1997-98 academic year highlights, LLU
Shortly before the year began, the University had ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the new facility that includes Coleman Pavilion (School of Medicine), Chan Shun Pavilion (Cancer Research Institute), and Wong Kerlee International Conference Center.

The School of Nursing inaugurated expanded facilities in West Hall, largely because of the generosity of Dr. Claran Jesse and Mrs. Marjorie Jesse.

Donors to the University made 133 gifts of $10,000 or more.

Twenty-one contributors made gifts of $100,000 or more.

The department of pediatrics in the School of Medicine is actively fundraising for its Pediatric Academic Endowment Fund. In the first month of this effort, more than $130,000 has been generated.

Fletcher Jones Foundation awarded a $414,595 grant to improve student and faculty access to computers and electronic information.

California Endowment granted $397,000 for Social Action Community Health System clinics to develop a primary care safety net for the Inland Empire. The grant also funded capital improvements for the main clinic at SAC-Norton.

Henry L. Guenther Foundation awarded a grant of $1,485,000 for development of a new treatment protocol for Parkinson’s disease.

In its second year of fundraising, donors have contributed $1.6 million toward the School of Dentistry’s “Building for the Future” campaign. This expansion project will add urgently needed space for dental surgery and pediatric dentistry.

Total current and planned gifts: $2,220,426

  • Total current gifts: $2,185,426
  • Total planned gifts: $35,000

The Loma Linda University Ken Venturi Proton Therapy Cancer Research Endowment topped the $1 million mark. These funds were raised primarily through the annual Proton Charity Invitational, hosted by Ken Venturi at The Club at Morningside in Rancho Mirage each May. In addition to the
consistent support of many corporate sponsors and players in the golf tournament since it began in 1991, many other individuals and organizations have contributed toward the endowment’s research efforts.

Employees of the federal government, military, postal service, and private companies across the country continued their strong support of the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital through the annual charity fund drives held at their workplaces. These individuals gave $80,000.

The Del E. Webb Foundation made its fourth annual grant of $200,000 toward a research endowment at the Proton Treatment Center. A goal of $1 million will be reached in 1998.

Bequests from five individuals who had included the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital in their wills totaled $616,641. In addition, an individual established a $35,000 annuity to benefit the Proton Treatment Center.
