Board of Trustees Report to the Constituencies 1997
The mission of the Center for Christian Bioethics is to enhance teaching, research, and service in biomedical ethics and related fields with emphasis on needs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 1997—98 academic year highlights Moved to new offices in Coleman Pavilion, made possible by a $30,000 grant from the Thompson Charitable Foundation Presented eight bioethics grand rounds Co-sponsored a two-day conference on “Spirituality and Ethics in Patient Care,” featuring nine presenters from across the U.S. Presented three annual John Bryant Wong Bioethics Essay Awards Co-sponsored showing of “Healing by Killing,” a documentary on involvement of physicians and nurses in Holocaust atrocities Sponsored the annual Jack W. Provonsha Lecture at the School of Medicine’s Alumni Postgraduate Convention Invested $10,870 in books and journals for the Carolyn and Ralph Thompson Bioethics Library. This growing collection of approximately 3,000 volumes is one of the finest resources of its kind. Prepared a resource paper for the Adventist Church on the ethical issues prompted by the possibility of cloning human beings Prepared a resource paper for the Adventist Church on personal and corporate ethical guidelines pertinent to denominational life Granted a summer internship in biomedical and clinical ethics Distributed complimentary copies of Update, the Center’s eight-page news-and-views-letter, to 10,000 recipients each quarter Submitted a collection of essays from an earlier conference titled “Bioethics and Human Destiny” to a major Christian firm for possible publication Provided consultation services for Centura, the largest health-care delivery system in Colorado The annual Contributors Convocation was held at Wong Kerlee International Conference Center.
