Board of Trustees Report to the Constituencies
1997
Faculty have produced a number of publications, including two commentaries by Ivan Blazen, PhD, professor of religion, on Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, and a book by James Walters, PhD, professor of religion, titled What is a Person? One new faculty member, Mark Carr, completed his PhD degree in ethics. Dr. Carr joined the Faculty of Religion in July, 1997, while completing his dissertation at the University of Virginia. Revision of the University’s general education program for baccalaureate students now calls for each student to select at least one course in Adventist studies. Students may select from four different courses that focus on Adventist heritage, beliefs, and practices. This new program of Adventist selectives has been met with enthusiasm both from teachers and from students. A joint program for a master’s degree
A new master’s degree in clinical ministry continues to attract students. This degree will soon be available via distance learning by using various electronic media, including the Internet. Randall L. Roberts, DMin, MFCC, was named Faculty of Religion associate dean, the first person to hold this post. Dr. Roberts was awarded the Zapara Award for teaching excellence in June–the first Faculty of Religion member to receive this distinction. The number of religion courses offered continues to climb, exceeding 150 this year. The number of credits in religion earned by LLU students topped 8,000 for the first time, and the number of full-time faculty positions authorized for the Faculty of Religion is now 12. University
