Stephen Ashwal, MD, professor of pediatrics, School of Medicine, and director of the Muscular Dystrophy Associationâs clinic at LLUMC, has been identified among ãAmericaâs Best Doctorsœ in the prestigious nationwide guide, The Best Doctors in America. From February 10 to 27, the School of Allied Health Professions held its annual phonathon, raising $23,300 from 547 alumni. In a special feature section titled ãWhy Smokers Donât Quit: New Clues to How Nicotine Affects the Brain,œ the Wall Street Journal (May 5, 1997) quoted Linda Ferry, MD, MPH, associate professor, health promotion and education, as an expert. The School of Medicine received more than $10,000 from the San Bernardino County Medical Society and Auxiliary on June 2, to apply toward its financial assistance program and general pursuit of excellence. Robert Kinzer, DDS, chair, department of restorative dentistry, School of Dentistry, conducted a three-day continuing education course in fixed prosthodontics for dentists in Cameroon. A book written by W. William Hughes, PhD, professor of physical therapy, School of Allied Health Professions, titled Essentials of Environmental Toxicology÷The Effects of Environmentally Hazardous Substances on Human Health, received a glowing review in the Journal of Toxicology. SIMS (Students for International Mission Service) participants returned from Ecuador on July 30. This trip, comprised of 15 individuals from medical, dental, and public health fields, was instrumental in furthering the organizationâs mission of ministering to the physical and spiritual needs of others. The group spent time at four sites. The Graduate Schoolâs department of psychology has been working on developing and establishing an outpatient clinic for two years. On July 1, the Psychological Services Center officially opened. Ronald L. Carter, PhD, professor of natural sciences, Graduate School, was assisted by William K. Hayes, PhD, associate professor of natural sciences, in organizing a new symposium, ãBiosystematics, Behavioral Ecology, and Conservation of Iguanas,œ part of a major conference that attracted approximately 2,000 scientists from around the world. The first major expansion to the School of Dentistry in 20 years will add approximately 12,000 square feet to Prince Hall, and will provide two new patient entrances. Helen King, PhD, dean, School of Nursing, traveled to South America, where she joined a 12-member accreditation team organized by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Robert L. Wilkins, PhD, RRT, professor and chair, department of cardiopulmonary sciences in the School of Allied Health Professions, recently authored and edited a textbook, Respiratory Disease: A Case Study Approach to Patient Care. A new endowment fund for the department of pediatrics has been established at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. The idea for the fund was conceived by Stephen Ashwal, MD, professor of pediatric neurology in the School of Medicine. Assistant professor of nutrition in the School of Public Health Zaida Cordero-MacIntyre, MPH, REHS, MS, RD, CNSD, spoke at the Eighth Argentinian Congress of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition in Buenos Aires. Ms. Cordero-MacIntyre, who is currently completing her doctor of philosophy degree, spoke on ãCare of the Obese Critical Patient,œ ãNutritional Assessment of the Critically Ill Patient,œ and ãThe Role of the Dietitian in the Nutrition Support Team.œ LLU student Louann Cofrancesco was awarded the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Quality of Life Award for her efforts in putting together an orientation package for employees of the voice and speech section of NIH. Publication of the results of the national registry examination for health information administration showed excellent scores for LLU graduates. Four graduates performed above the 90th percentile and three performed above the 80th percentile. The top two scores were 98 and 97. In addition, Loma Lindaâs health information administration program ranked sixth nationwide when compared with 57 other bachelorâs programs. Zuzana Bic, MD, DrPH, a 1997 graduate of the School of Public Health, presented findings of her doctoral research at the 38th annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Headache (AASH), held in San Diego. Dr. Bicâs research found that limiting the intake of fatty foods can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine headaches. Some of the household magazines carrying her findings include: Better Homes and Gardens (December, 1997), Glamour (June, 1997), Ladiesâ Home Journal (December, 1996), Menâs Health (March, 1997), New Woman (January, 1997), and Womanâs Day (February, 1997). More clinically oriented journals carrying her findings include The Chronicle of Neurology & Psychology, Family Practice, Family Practice News, Internal Medicine News, Medical Hypotheses, and Ob/Gyn News. The Secretary-General of the All-Russian Dental Association (equivalent to the American Dental Association) visited the campus on December 11 and 12. The opening of the Assistive Technology Assessment Center (ATAC) was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. ATAC is a partnership designed to improve the quality of life for students with low-incidence disabilities and special needs through the assessment and implementation of assistive technology. The Montgomery Street Foundation, headquartered in San Francisco, awarded
two grants of $100,000 each for research at Loma Linda University. One
grant will support a study coordinated by James M. Slater, MD, chair
of the department of radiation medicine, School of Medicine, titled
ãStage-specific Outcomes of Alternative Treatments of Prostate Cancer.œ
The second grant will help fund research by Marino DeLeón, PhD,
associate professor of physiology and pharmacology, A book authored by Robert L. Wilkins, PhD, RRT, chair of the department of cardiopulmonary sciences in the School of Allied Health Professions, has been translated into several languages for its use around the world. In addition to the English language edition, Dr. Wilkinsâ book, Lung Sounds: A Practical Guide, has been translated into Spanish and Italian, and has been contracted for translation into Polish. The 1998 School of Nursing phonathon reached about 1,380 alumni, and raised nearly $30,500. Victor C. West, BDSSc/BSc, adjunct professor of orthodontics in the School of Dentistry, was awarded a gold medal and appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia early in April, honoring his ãservice to dentistry in the field of orthodontics as an educator and administrator, and to the community.œ The Loma Linda University and Medical Center office of public affairs & marketing, under the leadership of W. Augustus Cheatham, MSW, vice president for public affairs & marketing, received seven crystal professional excellence awards from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), California Inland Empire Chapter, on Wednesday, April 1. The 1997 Polaris Awards and Annual Reception was held at the Riverside Art Museum. Entries were judged by members of the Arizona chapter. The School of Dentistry recently received a check for $50,000 from the Hutto-Patterson Charitable Foundation for a new pediatric dentistry clinic. This was the fourth installment of a $250,000 gift for the clinic÷part of a new addition scheduled for Prince Hall. Sylvan Lashley, PhD, president, Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, Massachusetts, signed a Medical Scholars Early Acceptance Program (MSEAP) articulation agreement with the School of Medicine. The School of Medicine actively recruits students from disadvantaged backgrounds and provides support programs and services to facilitate admission. A group of 28 students and faculty members from Loma Linda University traveled to Ethiopia during spring break, March 19 to April 5, where they participated in a ãfly-n-buildœ project at Gimbie Adventist Hospital located in western Ethiopia, as part of an initiative begun by Adventist Health International-Ethiopia. On April 6, approximately 20 Inland Empire social agencies participated in the third annual social work career fair held in Gentry Gymnasium. Representatives from four counties (Kern, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino) provided information about their programs and available social work positions. One hundred seventy Loma Linda University School of Dentistry students volunteered their time and talents for the ãClinic With a Heartœ on Sunday, April 5. Among the treatments given were 108 fillings on adults, 29 fillings for children, 84 adult tooth extractions, and 13 pediatric extractions. Health administration students Jeffrey Davies, Pooja Goel, and Claudette Rodriguez placed third in the American College of Health Executives (ACHE) College Bowl and won $500. The winnings were donated toward the Health Administration ACHE Scholarship Fund. More than 25 health administration students from Loma Linda attended. Hundreds of the homeless from various communities in San Bernardino County attended the Homeless Care Faire, held April 22 at SAC-Norton clinic in San Bernardino. A number of health screening services were provided. Many of the Faireâs visitors receive medical care only when they are very sick. The Faire provides a way for health professionals to treat these individuals under better conditions. The School of Public Healthâs nutrition department received approval from the Commission on Accreditation/Approval of Dietetic Education of the American Dietetic Association to offer a new registered dietitian (RD) credential program. For the sixth year, Loma Linda University is offering an apprentice program to 14 minority high school students interested in learning about careers in science. The Loma Linda University Board of Trustees approved LLU as a member
of the corporation, Adventist Health International-Ethiopia. This organization
was established with the cooperation of the General Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists, the Eastern Africa Division, and the Ethiopia Union to assist
the Adventist hospital and clinics in Ethiopia. There is no financial
liability or commitment from LLU. The University will assist in the
establishment of governance, organization, policy, and procedure items,
and the coordination of volunteer groups to assist the hospital and
clinics.
