1997-98 academic year highlights
A new master of health information systems [MHIS] degree is a ćmarriageœ of computer science and health information to fill a growing niche market in the health-care system for individuals prepared to design databases and retrieve essential information.

The School prepared six faculty for the new School of Allied Health at West China University of Medical Science, in Chengdu, Peopleās Republic of China. This will be the first such school in China. Physicians were trained in each of four clusters: rehabilitation sciences, nutrition and food science, imaging technology, and intensive care specialty.

A distance learning degree for occupational therapy assistants in Fresno, California, was initiated through interactive video technology. Ten students will complete the program in September, 1998. The new class to enter in September, 1998, has a prospective enrollment of 15 to 18 individuals.

The School initiated an entry-level doctoral program in physical therapy (DPT) as a combination of the postmasterās doctoral program and the current entry-level masterās degree in physical therapy. Twelve students entered the program June 15, 1998.

The School initiated a new track in the master of science degree in nutrition through the Graduate School, with an emphasis on nutrition-care management, responding to a need within the Adventist health-care system.

Interdisciplinary service learning was established at the SAC-Norton clinic among occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech pathology, as well as with other disciplines represented at the clinic.

A portfolio course was established which educates and evaluates student progress toward meeting the goals of the ideal allied health professional. Responses indicate marked student progress in
such areas as reflecting on community service, sensitivity to diversity, and value of compassion learned in a Christian institution.

Increased success in co-teaching of Christian ethics courses by School of Allied Health Professions faculty with the Faculty of Religion is noted; this is now occurring in more than 80 percent
of the courses.

The second annual School of Allied Health Professions alumni weekend resulted in an attendance of more than 400 individuals, primarily at continuing education sessions.
