1997-98 academic year highlights
The Loma Linda pass rate for senior dental students on the Western Regional Board Examination was 98 percent. Loma Linda students won first-place awards in research competitions at both the California Dental Association and the California Dental Hygiene Association scientific meetings. The School of Dentistry initiated a new pilot project to evaluate a mentored competency-based comprehensive care clinic for pre-doctoral students. Development of the first phase of the new pre-doctoral curriculum (basic sciences) was completed, with implementation scheduled for fall, 1998. Groundbreaking for the Prince Hall addition occurred in February. The 12,000-square-foot expansion of clinic and laboratory space is expected to be completed in 1999. A new Center for Dental Research was established. The significant growth of externally funded research in the School continued. Fred Kasischke, DMin, was recruited to become the new assistant dean for admissions, spiritual nurture, and service learning. The applicant pool to School of Dentistry increased 7 percent, while national applicants to dental schools declined by 5 percent.
