Loma Linda students won first-place awards in research competitions at both the California Dental Association and the California Dental Hygiene Association scientific meetings.

The School of Dentistry initiated a new pilot project to evaluate a mentored competency-based comprehensive care clinic for pre-doctoral students.

Development of the first phase of the new pre-doctoral curriculum (basic sciences) was completed, with implementation scheduled for fall, 1998.

Groundbreaking for the Prince Hall addition occurred in February. The 12,000-square-foot expansion of clinic and laboratory space is expected to be completed in 1999.

A new Center for Dental Research was established.

The significant growth of externally funded research in the School continued.
