1997-98 academic year highlights The Brian and Maureen Bull Faculty Center opened in February, 1998. Located in Coleman Pavilion, the Center features a lounge and dining room and is open to all Loma Linda University faculty. A new endowment fund for the department of pediatrics was established at the School of Medicine. The idea for the endowment fund was conceived by Stephen Ashwal, MD, professor of pediatric neurology. The Center for Neuroimmunology was approved to begin operation on May 11 by the Board of Trustees. The Center fosters and supports research that incorporates the scientific foundations of the broad interaction between the nervous system and the immune system in the context of whole-person care. The merger of faculty medical groups into School of Medicine corporations continued. The School of Medicine received more than $10,000 from the San Bernardino County Medical Society and Auxiliary on June 2, to be applied toward the School of Medicineās financial assistance program and to the general pursuit of excellence. The School of Medicine and Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, Massachusetts, signed a Medical Scholars Early Acceptance Program (MSEAP) articulation agreement. The School of Medicine actively recruits students from disadvantaged backgrounds and provides support programs and services to facilitate admission. School of Medicine dean Brian S. Bull, MD, was honored on January 23 by the Loma Linda Chamber of Commerce as its ćCitizen of the Year. The Chamber of Commerce cited Dr. Bullās contributions to Loma Lindaās reputation through his leadership as dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for clinical faculty of the University.
Twenty-eight School of Medicine faculty members were listed in the Pacific Region edition of The Best Doctors in America. The regional guide is based on an exhaustive survey in which more than 5,000 physicians in the Pacific area were asked to rate the clinical abilities of their peers. Twenty School of Medicine students participated in mission electives in eight locations throughout the world including Argentina, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Zambia.
