1997-98 academic year highlights
The First Seventh-day Adventist International Nursing Conference was held October 20 to 24 at Wong Kerlee International Conference Center at the request of the General Conference Departments of Education and Health and Temperance. Forty-one nurse educators from 26 institutions
in 20 countries attended.

The School of Nursing Spiritual Retreat at Camp Cedar Falls, held January 23 to 25, was organized by faculty members Earline Miller, PhD, RN, assistant professor, and Bernadine Irwin, PhD, RN, associate professor, and co-presidents of the Associated Students of Nursing, Vashti Perez and Christine Gomez. Featured speaker was Graduate School doctoral student Garth Jon Olango.

The California Board of Registered Nursing visited the School of Nursing February 23 to 25 to evaluate the pre-licensure nursing program and the nurse practitioner program. Both were re-accredited for five years.

Remodeling and refurbishing of West Hall greatly enhanced the appearance of the School of Nursing and added four new classrooms. This was made possible by a gift from Dr. Claran and Mrs. Marjorie Jesse. The Board of Trustees were invited to a luncheon in the new atrium classroom and student lounge on Monday, May 11.

Patricia Jones, DrPH, MS, RD, professor of nutrition and associate dean; Lois Van Cleve, PhD, RN, professor and associate dean; and Patricia Pothier, MS, RN, assistant professor, were featured speakers at the national conference of the Chinese Nurses Association. They also presented workshops at the Peking University Medical College in Beijing, Suzhou Medical College in Suzhou, and Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital in Hongzhou, and established important contacts in Mongolia.

Sophia Puerto, PhD, RN, CCRN, assistant professor, taught a course on critical care nursing in Costa Rica, and basic electrocardiography and advanced life support in Colombia.

Helen E. King, PhD, RN, dean, was one of the Adventist Accrediting Association site visitors to Adventist University of Central America in Costa Rica, April 1 to 5.

Dynnette Hart, DrPH, RN, assistant professor, and Kenneth Hart, MD, assistant professor, international health, School of Public Health, were speakers for a womenās health ministry conference at Mountain View College in the Philippines April 3 to 19.

At an awards celebration on May 20, the School of Nursing gave out $117,916.86 in awards and scholarships. Special guest Mary Ann Mitchell presented three scholarships made possible by an endowed fund established by her late sister Rosie Voss.

Students in child health nursing and health promotion classes helped with immunizations and assessments at the Kids Care Fair.

Students in community health nursing implemented services to homeless children and their families as a part of their clinical experience.

Penny Miller, PhD, RN, associate professor, and Eva Miller, MS, RN, associate professor, participated in the orientation of a delegation of parish nurses for the Parish Nurse Program of Adventist Community Team Services (ACTS) and the University Church of Seventh-day Adventists.

Marilyn Smith, EdD, professor, taught a distance-learning course to Atlantic Union College during their spring semester, using web pages for assignments and major outline points along with weekly assignments done via e-mail interspersed with three hours of televideo conferencing between students in community health nursing at Loma Linda and AUC department of nursing.

Faculty member Betty Winslow, PhD, RN, associate professor, completed a two-year postdoctoral research fellowship at UCLA in health-care research of vulnerable populations. The fellowship was funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health.

Faculty member Eva Miller, MS, RN, associate professor, was a site visitor for the Commission on Teacher Credentials, State Department of Education, to the University of California at San Franciscoās school nurse credential program. She traveled to Sacramento on June 25 to make a report of findings to the Committee on Accreditation.
