1997-98 academic year highlights
Student affairs is committed to whole-person student development. Cocurricular aspects of student life on campus are planned by student affairs to assist students in achieving a healthy balance in every dimension of their personhood by:

  • fostering a caring Christian environment;
  • encouraging the demonstration of a personal Christian faith;
  • inspiring respect for an inclusion of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds;
  • providing opportunities for personal growth and development;
  • nurturing the development of social bonds;
  • assisting in the management of personal conflicts and crises;
  • cultivating a lifelong

    commitment to altruism and service;
  • promoting an active and healthy lifestyle; and
  • establishing an environment that supports the pursuit of personal and professional excellence.

The goal of the Student Association is unification of schools and support of diversity on campus through programs in religious activities, social activities, community service, and student government.

The annual Fall Festival, a welcome-back party for LLU students, was held in October. This yearās Festival drew a record attendance of more than 900 students.

The first annual spiritual Tri-College Retreat brought together students from La Sierra University, Pacific Union College, and LLU in November at Yosemite National Park.

The Talent Extravaganza, held on April 25, was a special evening for students and community members to showcase their talents in an evening of music, comedy, and entertainment.

Student counseling services

  • Implemented a substance-abuse program
  • Almost doubled number of students served for academic year
  • Enhanced spiritual integration into student counseling service
  • Increased availability of therapists with expansion of staff
  • Increased number of free counseling sessions from six to nine
  • Expanded hours of intake worker for student crisis consultation to 40 hours

Student health services

  • Student office visits in the clinic: 7,457
  • Students seen at off-site immunization clinics: 1,483
  • Total number of students seen: 8,940
  • Services provided: primary care, sports medicine clinic, womenās health clinic, pre-entrance immunization clinics and tracking, travel immunizations

Daniells Hall (graduate studentsā and menās residence)

  • Student residents: autumn, 168; winter, 143; spring, 131
  • One social activity per month
  • Ongoing opportunity for personal counseling

Lindsay Hall (womenās residence)

  • Student residents: autumn, 218; winter, 184; spring, 193
  • Weekly professional counseling
  • Regular social events

Teaching Learning Center (TLC)

  • Students enrolled in TLC classes: 308
  • Services provided include speed thinking courses, speed reading and work efficiency courses, writing courses, oral communication courses, preparation for national board exams, special services to assist students in evaluation of and improvement in learning styles and techniques, and a support group for students with learning disabilities.

International student services provided documents and advice to international students to enter and maintain status, and provided adjustment help to students adjusting to LLU and life in America. In 1997÷98, 525 non-U.S. students enrolled representing 85 countries.
