Dental hygiene research presented during spring meetings

Dental hygiene seniors in the School of Dentistry were awarded first, second, and third place dental hygiene table clinic awards at the Anaheim meeting of the California Dental Association in April.

Paul Mendiola and Heather Mihalka, senior dental hygiene students, earned first place for "A Survey of Disinfection Protocols for Water Lines in Private Dental Practices," sponsored by James Kettering, PhD, professor of microbiology.

Jenny Kim, Sonali Patel, and Kim Uyeyama, senior dental hygiene students, won second place with their project, "Efficacy of an Over-the-counter Whitening Agent as Compared to a Professionally Prescribed Whitening Agent," sponsored by Carlos Muñoz, DDS, MSD, professor and director of the Center for Dental Research.

Third-place ribbons were presented to Darcie Bell, Laura Bretsch, and Michael Lents, senior dental hygiene students, for their research, "The Antimicrobial Action of Oral Rinses When Used for 15 Seconds." This study was also sponsored by Dr. Kettering.
