At a reception on August 9, representatives from Glen Helen Raceway and Chaparral Motorsports presented a donation of more than $30,000 to the Loma Linda University Medical Center emergency department. The donation represents the proceeds from the Glen Helen/Chaparral Charity Golf Tournament, held in May at the Shandin Hills Golf Course in San Bernardino. Many of the 180 golfers who participated were motorcycle racing stars. William Wittlake, MD, chief of emergency medicine, graciously accepted the donation. "The partnership of Glen Helen and Chaparral with Loma Linda is very exciting," he said. "Their support will make a difference in the lives of people who come to the emergency department for care." With a portion of the money, Dr. Wittlake says the emergency department will aquire a bi-spectral monitor. The monitor measures electrical activity in the brain and transfers it into a numerical level of consciousness. This cutting-edge technology could prove to be especially useful for patients with head injuries and those requiring sedation for medical procedures.
