On May 18, Heritage Society members were treated to a dinner in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center. Special presentations were given by B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS, president of LLU and president and CEO of LLUMC; J. Lynn Martell, DMin, vice president for advancement, LLU&MC; James M. Slater, MD, FACR, director of the Proton Treatment Center; W. Augustus Cheatham, MSW, vice president for public affairs and marketing, LLU&MC; and Reiner S. Roeske, director, LLUCH Foundation. A highlight of the program featured an interview by Mr. Roeske of Earl-Adam Leuvano-Jacob, a Children's Hospital patient from Upland. Earl-Adam, a 15-year-old-young man, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a child. He was introduced to LLUMC when he came for emergency treatment when his own specialists were too far away to be reached quickly. After his interview, Earl-Adam asked to speak to Heritage Society members himself, and told them what life was like for him on an average day. "I like to do the same things any 15-year-old-boy likes to do," he says. "Thanks to my treatment here, I have been able to lead an active life." Dr. Martell's presentation included an interview with Somchai Cheunjit, MA, vice president for general services, Bangkok Adventist Hospital (BAH). Mr. Cheunjit is currently taking public health administration courses at LLU. He plans to take his training back to Bangkok and use it to improve programs at BAH. Mr. Cheatham interviewed Dr. Slater regarding new procedures soon to be available in the Proton Treatment Center. After the interview, Dr. Slater fielded questions from Heritage Society members regarding the proton treatment. Membership in the Heritage Society is extended to anyone who includes a gift to LLU, LLUMC, and/or LLUCH as part of his or her estate plan.
