Murals give PICU a warmer feel

Artist Deborah York painted the walls of the pediatric intensive care unit entryway with scenes of children playing.

It is never fun for a child to go to the hospital. The LLUCH pediatric intensive care unit recently turned to paint and brushes to make the experience a little easier for its patients.

With the goal of becoming a place where children can feel comfortable, PICU staff used donated money to have colorful murals painted on the formerly white walls, according to Tracy Halbmaier, RN, a PICU nurse.

"It has certainly made it a lot more friendly for our families and the children who come into the PICU," notes Katie Dalke, RN, MS, clinical director of the pediatric intensive care unit. "The unit went from having stark white walls to a much more child-friendly and a warmer environment."
