On Sunday, April 1, patients from toddlers to grandparents arrived in the chilly, foggy morning air to attend the School's 11th annual Clinic With a Heart. The event was staffed by 377 volunteers, including faculty, staff, and students.
"This has become a University-wide event," says Mary Hartwell, clinic manager. "Employees from areas of housekeeping, campus cafeteria, campus engineering, and media services volunteered for the event."
This year local restaurants donated food to feed the faculty, students, and staff. According to Ms. Hartwell, the School provided $19,423 worth of dentistry at no charge to the patients.
In 2001, 116 adults and 44 pediatric patients were screened.
Procedures included x-rays, amalgams, composites, simple and surgical extractions, sealants, pulpotomies, and crowns.
Crest was a major contributor, providing T-shirts to the volunteers, and complimentary toothpaste, toothbrushes, and floss to the patients.
Each year, one pediatric patient is selected to receive additional care, with funds contributed by Crest.
Also helping during the outreach event were local Baldyview ROP Dental Assisting School and Chaffey College dental assisting program, which brought 50 students and their instructors.
