LLU hosts seventh annual psychiatry symposium

More than 400 people attended this year's schizophrenia symposium titled "The patient with schizophrenia: profiles, diagnosis and treatment" held March 21 in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center.
The symposium was presented by LLU department of psychiatry's continuing medical education program and by Patton State Hospital. The program was chaired by William McGhee, MD, EdD, vice chair and professor, department of psychiatry, School of Medicine, and chief of professional education, Patton State Hospital.
The morning presentations focused on the treatment of schizophrenia and featured keynote speaker Stephen M. Stahl, MD, PhD, adjunct professor of psychiatry, University of California at San Diego, La Jolla, and chair, Neuroscience Education Institute, San Diego.
Dr. Stahl's presentation, "The psychopharmacology of atypical antipsychotics," utilized an interactive learning technique complete with keypads.
The afternoon portion of the seminar focused on schizophrenia and sexuality and featured William M. Glazer, MD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Ruth A. Dickson, MD, associate professor, department of psychiatry, University of Calgary, Canada; and Francine Chisholm, education coordinator, Manitoba.
The department of psychiatry already is planning for next year's conference to focus on biological aspects of schizophrenia and how medication works, as well as social skills training for the person with schizophrenia and assessing what needs to be learned in this area.
