Loma Linda University Medical Center was listed twice in the July 28, 1997, issue of U.S. News and World Report. This issue of the news magazine lists the best hospitals in the United States. LLUMC was listed as one of the best hospitals in the nation for the treatment of cancer, and as one of the top centers managing gynecological problems. U.S. News and World Report has been ranking hospitals for the past eight years. According to the magazine, the ranking is intended to aid people who need maximum skill in diagnosis and treatment. The rankings are based on reputational scores, predicted mortality, and other various medical factors as the use of advanced medical technology, and the availability of services for patients with specific needs. Exactly 1,800 hospitals met at least one of three initial requirements for consideration: affiliation with a medical school, membership in the Council of Teaching Hospitals, or a score of nine or more on a scale of available hospital technology. The rankings include 135 different hospitals. On June 13, Steven R. Gundry, MD, professor and head of LLUMC's division of cardiothoracic surgery, was interviewed by "ABC World News Tonight" about keyhole surgery, a new surgical technique for heart disease. University
