'ABC World News Tonight' interviews LLUMC surgeon
"ABC World News Tonight" recently interviewed
Steven R. Gundry, MD, professor and head of LLUMC's division of cardiothoracic
surgery, about keyhole surgery, a new heart surgery technique.
According to Dr. Gundry, "the new procedure holds the promise
of lower hospital costs, less pain, faster recovery, and a quicker return
to work than the more
common conventional procedure--coronary artery bypass surgery or valve
replacement surgery via a full sternotomy."
This relatively new keyhole surgical technique, also called minimally
invasive coronary artery bypass surgery, allows surgeons to operate
via a three-inch incision.
However, since it is designed to bypass only one or two arteries, keyhole
surgery will not be suitable for everyone.
After the interview, Dr. Gundry and the ABC camera crew went up to
unit 7100 to visit a recent keyhole patient from Pakistan.
The segment aired on ABC in August.
