Third annual clergy conference focuses on children and violenceOver 350 clergy, health-care workers, and other caregivers attended the third annual Clergy Conference on October 14 at the University Church. Focus of the conference was on children and violence. "Violence has become a way of life for too many children in today's society," points out Tim Evans, MDiv, Children's Hospital chaplain and conference coordinator. "Too often violence occurs at school, home, or in our communities, all of which ought to be safe havens for children. When violence happens to a child either directly or as a witness, the effects can be life long--physically, emotionally, and spiritually. "Our goal was to present clergy, educators, and clinicians with opportunities to help curb the tide of violence, as well as to help those who have been victims of violent behavior," Mr. Evans says. Caregivers heard presentations from experts in churches, schools, law enforcement, health-related fields, and victims themselves about methods that are currently in place to curtail this trend. Goal of the conference was to equip caregivers with proven methods and techniques to enable them to intervene effectively. At the conference, John Mace, MD, chair, department of pediatrics, presented the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Commitment to the Spirituality of Children Lifetime Award to Lois Zeigler O'Donnell, director of the Children's Fund headquartered in San Bernardino. The award is presented every year by Children's Hospital to an individual who has exemplified far-reaching dedication to Inland Empire children. For a two-hour panel discussion, the chapel was transformed into a television studio and the session was videotaped and then satellite fed to 115 sites in the U.S. and Canada one week later. The Conference was a presentation of the Medical Center, Children's Hospital, and Service Corporation International. [Scope, Autumn '97 contents] [NEWSCOPE contents]
