Drowning Prevention Summit draws more than 140 participants

A Drowning Prevention Summit was held at the Wong Kerlee International Conference Center on July 10. The summit was sponsored by Loma Linda University Children's Hospital, SAFE KIDS Coalition, and the Inland Empire Drowning Prevention Network.

Approximately 140 health-care personnel, firefighters, concerned citizens, politicians, coroners, and parents whose children have drowned were there to discuss the dangers. The summit's theme was "Ducks float. Kids don't."

"Unnecessary childhood drowning incidents claim or alter far too many of our children's lives each year," explains Nancy Hernandez, RN, associate pediatric trauma coordinator. "Losing even one child to a drowning is one too many."

"It is our belief that childhood drowning incidents are preventable, and that there is much we can do to increase awareness on this issue and save the lives of many of our children," says Connie Cunningham, RN, director, pediatric trauma services and SAFE KIDS.

The third annual handcart fundraiser, "For the Children," was held Sunday, September 21. Twenty teams of four people each took turns pumping an old-fashioned railroad handcart down 800 feet of railroad track to raise money for Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. The fastest time--29.7 seconds--was achieved by a team from Ims Racing of Moreno Valley.
