Memorial service held for Dr. U. D. Register
Born in 1920, in West Monroe, Louisiana, Dr. Register earned his bachelor of science degree from Madison College, Madison, Tennessee, in 1942. In 1944, Dr. Register was granted a master of science degree from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1950, he was granted a doctor of philosophy degree in nutrition from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Subsequent to completing postdoctoral study at Tulane University in 1951, he joined the School of Medicine's department of biochemistry. In 1967, he joined the newly established School of Public Health, serving with distinction as professor and first chair of the department of nutrition. In 1985, he was named emeritus professor of nutrition. Dr. Register is known for his research. He was one of the world's foremost experts on vitamin B12. He also investigated the adequacy of protein in vegetarian diets and the biological value of vegetarian foods. In 1969, he participated in the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health. In 1974, Dr. Register was invited by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council to write their statement on vegetarian diets. He also coauthored major publications for the American Dietetic Association, substantiating the nutritional adequacy of vegetarian diets. Special recognition was given to Dr. Register on two separate occasions. During the Third International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition held at Loma Linda in March, 1997, and attended by more than 600 participants, he was given special recognition by his colleagues for his knowledge and expertise in nutrition. He was also honored during the 1997 School of Public Health conferring-of-degrees ceremonies last June with the distinguished service award. Dr. Register is survived by his wife, Helen, and daughters Rebecca, Dorothy, and Deborah. [Scope, Autumn '97 contents] [NEWSCOPE contents]
