California Endowment awards $394,717 planning grant to SAC Health System

The California Endowment has awarded $394,717 to the Social Action Community (SAC) Health System clinics. The award constitutes a planning grant to assist SAC Health System in the continued delivery of primary health care to the underserved population of the region served by the clinics.

The Endowment has titled this grant-supported effort the "San Bernardino Community Health Planning Project."

The award will be disbursed over 12 months under its Community Health Investment Program. The planning effort to be implemented by SAC Health System is to: 1) initiate a community planning process to preserve the health-care safety net in the Inland Empire; 2) develop a quality management system for SAC Health System; and 3) completely refurbish the heating and air conditioning system at SAC Norton clinic.

A primary care program that began as a volunteer-driven effort in the 1970s, SAC Health System is presently a five-clinic system that provides care to about 50,000 patients annually.

"The California Endowment is serious about ensuring care for the underserved in the state of California," says Richard H. Hart, MD, DrPH, president of SAC Health System and dean of the School of Public Health. "The Endowment and its officers and staff have been keenly aware of the lack of services in this area."

Dr. Hart continues, "Over the past few months, they have worked intensively with SAC Health System leadership to formulate a program-planning approach to ensure basic health care for our region. We welcome the Endowment's commitment to have SAC Health System serve as the lead agency for the delivery of care to our region's community."

The California Endowment, established in May of 1996, is a private foundation located in Woodland Hills, California.

The Foundation's mission is to improve access to affordable, quality health for underserved individuals, and to promote fundamental improvements in the health status of all Californians.

A regional orientation for Foundation activities has been adopted to ensure access to all constituents, and to improve the Foundation's understanding of the unique needs of the diverse people and communities of California.
