School of Dentistry 'Building for the Future,' planning first major expansion in 20 years
The first major expansion to the School of Dentistry in 20 years will add approximately 12,000 square feet to Prince Hall, and will provide two new patient entrances.
The pediatric dentistry clinic will relocate to the ground-floor level of the new expansion and will be enlarged to accommodate the increasing number of young patients who come to the School for their dental care.
A special entrance for the pediatric dentistry clinic will be added on the east side of the building. A grant of $250,000 from the Hutto-Patterson Charitable Foundation has been awarded for the construction of this clinic.
Also moving to the ground-floor level will be the Surgery Center for dentistry. Their patient population includes the mentally and/or physically challenged, and pre-cooperative and fearful children. A new entrance on the north end of Prince Hall will allow convenient access for these patients to the facility.
A new student laboratory is also planned for the ground floor level. The School of Dentistry Alumni Association has committed funding for construction of this area, and the dental class of 1977 is contributing toward the furnishing of the laboratory.
The "Building for the Future" campaign began in January, with an internal phase inviting faculty and staff of the School of Dentistry to give their support.
During the summer, the campaign was expanded to School of Dentistry alumni.
Within the first nine months of 1997, more than $102,000 had been received in cash and pledges, and additional foundation funding is being sought for this project. Commitments of $250,000 each have been made by the Loma Linda University Dental Group, Inc., and the faculty of the dental anesthesiology department.
