School of Nursing dean visits South America with accreditation team

Helen King, PhD, dean, School of Nursing, has returned from South America, where she joined a 12-member accreditation team put together by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

"The General Conference wishes to evaluate each of the church-operated educational institutions," observes Dr. King, "to ensure their quality and that they are being true to their mission."

During the trip, Dr. King gathered data in order to evaluate the nursing programs offered by Universidad Adventista del Plata in Argentina, and the Instituto Adventista de Encino (Adventist Institute of Learning) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

"During the accreditation process," observes Dr. King, "one of the things that impressed me was the length of time the Universities had been in operation. It is interesting that they were getting their start at about the same time that Loma Linda was being established."

Graduates of the Adventist institutions in South America are in high demand upon graduation. "The hospitals and clinics told school administrators," says Dr. King, "that they have found their graduates to be competent nurses, who are concerned with the spiritual care of their patients, are responsible, and are respectful of authority."

Also on the accreditation team was Dwight Evans, MD, associate professor, School of Medicine, who evaluated Universidad Adventista del Plata's medical school. The evaluators' comments are being readied for presentation to the institutions.

Dr. King also visited the University of Santa Amaro in Sao Paulo, a well-established institution which was purchased by an Adventist businessman, to discuss ways the schools of nursing might work together.
