Loma Linda University launches new publication with vegetarian focus The success of university-based, consumer-oriented health and nutrition newsletters is proof that consumers want up-to-date information--and especially information that they know comes from a reliable source, says Patricia Johnston, DrPH, RD, associate dean, School of Public Health and editor-in-chief of a new publication, Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter. "Up to now, no university-associated publication has exclusively focused on vegetarian issues," Dr. Johnston says. "With the number of vegetarians on the rise, the need is greater than ever for accurate information, presented in a way that is easy to understand and that consumers can use in practical ways." Loma Linda University will fill this need with a Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter. Published 10 times per year, this eight-page periodical is packed with the nutrition information that every vegetarian needs. As a bonus to SCOPE subscribers, a free copy of the first issue has been bundled with the Autumn issue. Each issue will include a feature article on a cutting-edge topic written by a leading nutrition expert, as well as reports of the latest research findings on vegetarian nutrition, answers to reader questions by health experts, practical tips on putting current nutrition information into practice, news on resources for vegetarians, new products, upcoming events, and more. "Research on vegetarian nutrition has been a focus at Loma Linda University for more than half a century, and the University is a leading force in efforts to promote sound, scientifically-based information on vegetarian diets," Dr. Johnston indicates. Last spring, LLU hosted the Third International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition, which brought together nutrition professionals from around the world for what is widely regarded as the world's most important gathering of experts on vegetarian nutrition. Now, with the publication of Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter, Loma Linda University creates a new focus, translating the science of vegetarianism into langauge that will help consumers plan healthier, plant-based diets. The feature article of the first issue of Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter presents the latest finding on plant foods and cancer prevention. Other topics include tips for boosting calcium in the diets of preschoolers who don't drink milk, hints for introducing beans into the diet without uncomfortable gas, ideas for fast and simple meals using a meat replacer that makes the transition to vegetarian diets tasty and easy, guidelines for finding reliable information on the Internet, the latest research on soy and cholesterol, and much more. Dr. Johnston played a major role in the First International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition held in 1987, and served as program chair for the subsequent two congresses as well as serving as editor of the Congress Proceedings. She writes and speaks on topics related to vegetarian nutrition for both professional and lay audiences. Senior editors for the publication are Mark Messina, PhD, former program director in the diet and cancer branch of the National Cancer Instsitute, and Virginia Messina, MPH, RD, a public health nutritionist. Dr. Messina is an authority on soyfoods, phytoestrogens, and on plant-based diets, and has spoken throughout the world on these topics. He is editor of a peer-reviewed journal devoted to medical research on vegetarian diets and is co-author of the first textbook for health professionals on vegetarian diets. Mrs. Messina is a public health nutritionist who has taught at the university level and developed numerous materials and programs on vegetarian nutrition for consumers. She is co-author of the American Dietetic Association's position statement on vegetarian diets and co-author of the first textbook for health professionals on vegetarian diets, as well as author of several consumer nutrition books and cookbooks. One-year subscriptions to the newsletter for U.S. addresses are availablefor $24 ($34 in Canada or $44 outside Canada and the U.S.) by writing to Vegetarian Nutrition and Health Letter, 1707 Nichol Hall, School of Public Health, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, CA 92350.
