Faculty member works to improve Zambia feeding practices Gail Ormsby, MPH, director of the Center for Health and Development, School of Public Health, visited the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Child Alive project in Zambia during September. Ms. Ormsby worked with project staff to assist them with design of a nutrition intervention program to be implemented in the project target area, including Mwami Hospital, Catchment area, Chipata, and part of Chidiza Districts, east Zambia. In many rural communities, soybeans are grown as a cash crop but are not used for food. The project staff began conducting cooking demonstrations, showing how to make soy milk and vegetable relish that can be added to the staple food, maize meal. The project was funded by USAID through the ADRA central office. The primary goal of the project is to improve the nutritional status of women, and children under five years of age. Focus groups were used to investigate a variety of ideas and opinions about feeding practices. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have provided better insight and understanding of the beliefs and feeding practices, particularly during pregnancy, lactation, and weaning.
