School of Nursing will celebrate 100th year with Centennial Fellows program

[SCOPE, Spring 2002]

Almost a century ago, Loma Linda University established its first educational program—preparing nurses for the hospital that was just being started and for service worldwide.

During the academic year 2005–2006, the School of Nursing will celebrate its 100th birthday. To mark this occasion, the school is launching a host of centennial events and programs. One of these programs is the Centennial Fellows program.

The Centennial Fellows program is an initiative that gives donors the opportunity to invest a moderate amount of funds in the school and enjoy the recognition of becoming a Centennial Fellow. Gifts at levels of $20,000 or more will entitle the donor to this distinguished status.

“Today’s nurses face many challenges,” says Helen E. King, PhD, RN, dean of the School of Nursing. “Most of the students who come to us need financial assistance of some form. We feel it is our mission to not only provide the best nursing education to our students, but keep tuition affordable.”

The goal of the Centennial Fellowship program is to raise $1 million for an endowment called the School of Nursing Centennial Endowment Fund. This fund will support educational and scholarship programs within the school. As the fund grows over the years, the interest income will be used for the school’s highest priorities in the education of nursing students.

During alumni homecoming in 2006, a special Centennial Fellows donor wall will be unveiled in the school, as well as special events of recognition for the fellows.

“I am so excited about the opportunities this program brings to our school. We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate our school turning 100, and the fellows program is one way we can recognize this giant accomplishment. I encourage anyone to consider joining the school in celebration!” adds Dr. King.
