1930s

Ezra E. Richards (SM'35) passed away on July 3 in Loma Linda on his 95th birthday. He was born in 1904 in Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, two daughters, Rose Marie Drake and Marilyn May, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

1940s

Guy Marion Hunt Jr. (SM'42) died on February 17 in Hanford. He met Ione Fern Harrigan while in medical school, and they married in 1941. They were blessed with 57 years of marriage, two sons, and a daughter. Dr. Hunt entered the Army after graduating from Loma Linda, and served in France. In 1945, he returned to teach anatomy at LLU and to complete a residency in neurology. For 51 years, he taught neuroanatomy and cared for private patients at LLUMC. At various times during his career, he served as chief of staff, head of the anatomy department, and head of the neurology department. He also performed mission work in many countries. In 1997 he received a Distinguished Service Award from the School of Medicine, and a scholarship was started in his name. He is survived by his wife, Ione Hunt; a brother, Kirk Hunt; sons Kirk and James, and daughter, Kathleen Bailey; nine grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Reuben A. Sprengel (SM'53) assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco, has received the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Sprengel served as chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Bangkok (Thailand) Adventist Hospital from 1987 to 1995.

Duane M. Cady (SM'59), a general surgeon in private practice for more than 30 years in upstate New York, has been elected to the American Medical Association (AMA) board of trustees. Dr. Cady's record of leadership includes having served as medical staff president; chair, department of surgery; and member of the board of trustees, St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. Dr. Cady is past president and a member of the board of trustees of the Medical Society of the State of New York, has been appointed by Governor George Pataki to chair the New York State Medicaid Managed Care Advisory Council, and is a member of the governor's Taskforce on Hospital Reimbursement Reform and the Public Health Council's Taskforce on Pain Management. He and his wife, Joyce, have five children: Jann, Mark, Beth, David, and Jeff.

1960s

Jean M. (Howard) Crider (SN'62) passed away in Mesa, Arizona, on October 14, 1999, at the age of 85. She was born in Ingersoll, Ontario, on April 3, 1914. She graduated from Canadian Junior College with a two-year degree and completed a nursing degree at Washington Missionary College in 1939. She married Charles Crider, a ministerial student, and traveled with him to the Middle East as World War II ended. The couple served two terms as missionaries in Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon. She then worked at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles while completing her master's degree in nursing at LLU. She graduated with a specialization in maternal/ child care in 1962. She then worked in Michigan after Mr. Crider joined the faculty at Andrews University (Berrien Springs). After retirement, she and her husband made their home in Mesa, where they served as active members of the East Mesa Seventh-day Adventist Church. Her husband passed away in 1992. They are survived by four children, 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.

Henry A. Williams (SD'62) died at home in Evans, Georgia, on March 1. He practiced dentistry in Colorado for 10 years prior to joining the faculty of the dental school at the Medical College of Georgia, where he rose from assistant to full professor. He was a popular mentor and a sought-after lecturer on electrosurgery, esthetic, and cosmetic dentistry. He authored and co-authored scores of scientific presentations and publications. His contributions were cited in numerous certificates of merit. Dr. Williams was a member of the board of directors of the Medical College of Georgia Dental Foundation, serving a term as president. He was vice president of the American Academy of Dental Electrosurgery, an active member of the National Association of Adventist Dentists, and an elder in the Augusta Seventh-day Adventist Church. He served in missions including Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Thailand, providing dental relief work in refugee camps. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Jeff; two daughters: Linda Meister and Brenda Williams; four brothers, a sister, and a grandchild, Ashley Meister.

Robert Jon Green (SPH'63) is a professor of education in the School of Education at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee. His responsibility is training teachers in the use of technology in the classroom. He says, "I have developed a state-of-the-art, 21st century classroom. To date, nearly 1,000 educators have visited the unique classroom. In addition, I have served as consultant for a number of primary, secondary, and tertiary schools in their efforts to incorporate technology into their educational programs."

Thora Howard (SM'63) passed away on January 25. Her life story was featured in the January 29 Los Angeles Times. After watching the fall of Saigon on television in 1975, she was moved by the plight of families trying to leave the city. She immediately began to welcome Vietnamese families into her home, providing food, education, and transportation. In just four years, she took in 27 refugees. Children who came later included Cambodians and Laotians, Buddhists, and Confucianists. Dr. Howard worked as a radiologist at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles from 1963 until shortly before her death.

Hollis Fred Otis Cochran (SD'64) died January 17 in Hollister, California. He was born June 26, 1925, in San Pedro, California. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; three sons: Craig, Todd, and Christopher; and six grandchildren.

Arlene Jutzy Lee (SN'70) is president of Panadent Corporation, a company that manufactures dental instruments. The company was started in 1974 by her husband, Robert L. Lee (SPH'53; SD'59), who designed instrumentation for diagnosis and treatment of temporal mandibular disorders. The company manufactures articulators and a jaw movement recorder, as well as teaches dentists how to use these instruments and diagnose properly through the Lee Institute for Oral Bioesthetic and Function. Dr. Lee passed away in 1997. A group of dentists who had studied with him founded Orognathic Bioesthetic International, and are continuing to teach in clinical dentistry. Ms. Lee and her two sons, Thomas and Brent, are managing Panadent Corporation in Grand Terrace. Ms. Lee is president of the School of Nursing Alumni Associ.

Hansen Wang (SM'70) was appointed chair of the 17-member department of surgery at the Kaiser­Permanente medical facility in Fontana, according to the Winter, 2000, ViewPoint, which is published by Pacific Union College, Angwin. His brother, Harry Wang (SM'71), practices pediatric medicine in Sacramento.

Kay Ashworth (SAHP'71), chair of the occupational therapy assistant program at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio, was recently elected as the technical program director's representative to the Commission on Education (COE). Her three-year term begins in July.

Ronald (Ronn) Petersen (SAHP'72) passed away unexpectedly in his sleep from natural causes on January 8, 2000, at his home in Carmichael. Mr. Petersen was born in Blair, Nebraska, on June 28, 1948, to Martin and Betty (Jensen) Petersen. He and his siblings (older brother, Keith, and younger sisters Joan and Jeanne) lived on family farms with their parents. He graduated with honors from Platte Valley Academy in Shelton in 1966. He attended Union College in Lincoln for two years and married Margaret Weng on December 26, 1968. He graduated from LLU with a BS degree in physical therapy. He and his wife were blessed with two children: Amy Michelle in 1975, and Erik Jon in 1979. The family lived in Ventura and Paradise and in Eugene, Oregon, where

he was employed in physical therapy work. The family moved to Carmichael in 1985, where he owned and operated his own physical therapy practice, specializing in home health care, until his death. A member of the Adventist Church, he was a great encourager with a passion for life, and strived to live each day to its fullest. He believed that personal relationships were paramount and encouraged others to treasure the special people in their lives. He is survived by his children and parents, his brother and sisters, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a host of friends.

Donald Newbold (SAHP'74) worked as a clinical laboratory scientist until 1991. During his career, he worked in several laboratories, and in management positions. In 1991, he was hired by the State of Californiadepartment of health services, laboratory field services, as an examiner. In September, 1999, he changed careers to begin working as an attorney (staff counsel) at the State of California department of health services in Sacramento. He writes, "My education at LLU and my experiences as a licensed clinical laboratory scientist, examiner, and as an investigator will be invaluable in my current position."

"I look back on my days at Loma Linda and the education I received there," writes Walter Thurnhofer (SAHP'77), "and appreciate the solid foundation it gave me in preparation for my life journey." Mr. Thurnhofer is employed by Adventist Medical Center (AMC) in Portland, Oregon, as director of hospitality services. undergraduate master's degree nutrition and dietetics students come to AMC for field practicums and internships." He is on the board of directors for the American Society of Healthcare Food Service Administrators of the American Hospital Association. He also chairs a committee of industry, civic, and government leaders who review activities and make recommendations to the Multnomah County Environmental Health Department. He, his wife, Jan Thurnhofer (SN'77), and their daughters, Kristin and Melissa, live in a rural area. Mrs. Thurnhofer is a nurse auditor for AMC. Darla Amador (SD'78), a dental hygienist, practices and lives in Napa, California. She writes that she is planning to travel to Fiji in July with Project Fiji.

1980s

Steven J. Filler (SD'81) was appointed assistant dean for student, alumni, and external affairs at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry (Tuscaloosa), with responsibilities for postdoctoral and DMD program admissions, student and alumni affairs, and national and international programs. He is also director of the division of hospital dentistry at University of Alabama hospitals and professor in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He was the recipient of a five-year Dentist Scientist Award from the National Institutes of Health, and is a past president of the American Association of Hospital Dentists.

Michael C. Wood (SM'81; SAHP'87) is president of Ukiah Valley Medical Center/ Adventist Health, a 111-bed, acute care facility in Ukiah. Mr. Wood received a physician assistant degree from the School of Medicine and a health services administration degree from Loma Linda University in 1987. He is pursuing a PhD degree in leadership from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan.

1990s

LeAnn Poland Truesdale (GS'88; SD'90) recently completed her term as president of the Southern Nevada Dental Society, and as senior legislative representative for the Junior League of Las Vegas. She successfully lobbied for public water fluoridation for southern Nevada in the 1999 state legislative session. She and her husband, Terry Allen Truesdale (SD'90), have owned their general and cosmetic dental practice for more than six years and practice together four days a week. She is in her second year of law studies at UNLV­William S. Boyd School of Law. They live in Henderson.
