Two School of Medicine graduates received Women of the Year Awards for 2000 from the Association of Adventist Women in an awards ceremony held October 14 in Sacramento. Receiving the prestigious awards were Effie Jean Ketting, MD, a 1954 graduate, and Rebekah Wang-Cheng, MD, of the class of 1978-B. One of only three women in her School of Medicine class, Dr. Ketting completed residencies in both pathology and obstetrics and gynecology, before beginning her mission service. During most of her 20 years of mission service, she was the only pathologist within a 350-mile radius, typically doing pathology on 1,500 surgical specimens each year. She brought more than 16,000 babies into the world. On one record-breaking day, she delivered 18 babies--including two by cesarean section. Now retired, Dr. Ketting and her husband, Samuel Ketting, MD, a 1960 graduate of the School of Medicine, reside in Kennewick, Washington. Rebekah Wang-Cheng, MD, is board certified in internal medicine and joined the faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, in 1985 where she is now professor of medicine. Dr. Wang-Cheng is co-host with Dan Matthews on the television show, "Lifestyle Magazine." Dr. Wang-Cheng has been awarded the Medical College of Wisconsin's highest teaching award--membership in the Society of Teaching Scholars. In addition, she was elected president of the faculty council for 2000 to 2001, making her the chief faculty spokesperson. Outside of her academic environment, Dr. Wang-Cheng is a popular speaker on both medical and spiritual topics. Her newspaper column, "Dear Dr. Becky," runs in the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel.
