For 10 years, the Behavioral Medicine Center has opened its doors to people suffering from depression, drug addiction, mental disorders, and behavioral problems. With its focus on team care, the BMC has provided complete, one-stop care to people facing some of life's most difficult challenges. The BMC celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Tuesday, March 6, at an open house. The open house was held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the gymnasium, with special remarks and invocation given by B. Lyn Behrens, MBBS, president and chief executive officer of Loma Linda University Medical Center. With 89 beds, the BMC is now under the direction of CEO Zareh Sarrafian, MBA, and the leadership of Jill Pollock, RN, MS, MFT-intern. Ms. Pollock comes to the BMC from the Medical Center where she was the executive director of critical care and emergency services. She has been with LLUMC since 1975 and is honored to continue her service at the BMC. Ms. Pollock's graduate degree is in counseling psychology and she has a heart and passion for the mental health arena. "We have a wonderful ministry here to those with mental health and chemical dependency issues. I am looking forward to working with this great team at the BMC to further the mission of this institution," says Ms. Pollock. In 1991, the BMC featured an adult psychiatry unit, as well as special units for child and adolescent psychiatry, and adult chemical dependency. These services have expanded to include senior psychiatry, a full range of outpatient services, and a specialized chronic pain and medication dependency program. Experienced teams of psychiatrists, social workers, marriage and family therapy counselors, teachers, and others are able to work with the patients and help them reach their full potential. As part of its service to the community, the BMC also hosts 39 self-help groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous, Alateen, Narcotics Anonymous, and Teen Support Parenting Group. During 2000, the BMC treated more than 3,400 inpatients, approximately 850 outpatients, and more than 1,060 electroconvulsive therapy patients.
