The Loma Linda University Medical Center department of landscape received an award at the 30th Annual Education Conference of the National Institute on Park and Grounds Management, held in Orlando, Florida, in November, 2000. Gerhard Steudel, director of landscape, accepted the Excellence in Maintenance for Medical Centers award. The institute is a small professional organization made up of approximately 900 members from all over the United States and Canada who are responsible for large landscaped areas belonging to nonprofit institutions. Members represent institutions such as Brigham Young University, Johns Hopkins, Pennsylvania State University, Ohio State University, and University of California, Davis. Seventh-day Adventist institutions such as Pacific Union College, Angwin; Walla Walla College, College Place, Washington; Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan; and Atlantic Union College, South Lancaster, Massachusetts, are also represented. Mr. Steudel made three presentations at the conference on staying competitive in your field, dealing with violence in the workplace, and setting up an effective equipment maintenance program.
