Loma Linda University's public affairs team efforts recently received recognition from the Communicator Awards 2001 Print Media competition. The Communicator Awards is a national awards organization that recognizes outstanding work in the communications field. Entries were judged by industry professionals who looked for companies and individuals whose talent exceeded a high standard of excellence and whose work served as a benchmark for the industry. There were 3,344 entries in the 2001 competition. Winners came from advertising and public relations agencies, corporate communications departments, educational institutions, government agencies, and others. Award of Distinction Winning the Award of Distinction were the following submissions: Board of Trustees Report to the Constituencies, Quinquennium: 1996-2000 (category: annual report/medical); Inside Loma Linda University (category: brochure/recruitment); Loma Linda Nurse (category: magazine: educational institution); and SCOPE: Partners in Mission, Summer, 2000 (category: magazine/educational institution). Executive editor for the Board of Trustees Report was W. Augustus Cheatham, MSW, vice president for public affairs and marketing, LLUAHSC; managing editor was Waldena J. Gaede, associate director, University relations, LLU; associate editor was Nicole R. Cheatham, special projects editor, University relations, LLU; and contributing editor was Richard W. Weismeyer, director, University relations, LLU. Inside Loma Linda University was designed by Sherie Burke, MS, senior technical assistant, University relations, LLU, and written by Ms. Gaede and Mr. Weismeyer. Dustin Jones, special projects editor, University relations, LLU, did the design and copy editing for Loma Linda Nurse. Managing editor for the magazine was Diana Fisher, MA, development director for the School of Nursing, LLU. Executive editor for SCOPE was Mr. Cheatham; editor was Mr. Weismeyer; and managing editor was Ms. Gaede. The Award of Distinction designation was given for submitted projects that exceeded industry standards in communicating a message or idea. Honorable mention Honorable mention certificates were given to The Good Samaritan (category: brochure/public relations) and Wash your hands! (category: advertisement/newspaper). The Good Samaritan brochure was produced by Ms. Gaede and Mr. Weismeyer. Part of a Medical Center prevention campaign to encourage handwashing, the ad Wash your hands! was written and designed by Ms. Gaede. Honorable mention certificates were granted to entries that met the high standards of the industry.
