Loma Linda University School of Allied Health Professions and Humanitec Rehabilitation College (HRC), located in Yokkaichi, Japan, linked via videoconferencing on Saturday evening, March 17, to initiate the new degree program in health sciences for the physical therapy and occupational therapy students of HRC, according to Joyce W. Hopp, PhD, MPH, RN, dean, School of Allied Health Professions. During the opening program, Masayuki Ohasi, president; Junichi Nomura, MD, principal; Akira Tsushima, PT, program coordinator; and faculty members represented Humanitec Rehabilitation College. Loma Linda was represented by Dr. Hopp; W. William Hughes, PhD, associate dean, School of Allied Health Professions, and professor of physical therapy; Edd J. Ashley, EdD, chair, department of physical therapy; Liane Hewitt, MPH, chair, department of occupational therapy; Keiko I. Khoo, MA, chair, department of speech-language pathology and audiology; and Jerry E. Daly, MA, MSLS, director, Del E. Webb Memorial Library. "The Loma Linda program working with Humanitec Rehabilitation College will utilize on-site instruction by faculty traveling to Japan from Loma Linda University, on-line education, video-conferencing, and the students spending one quarter at Loma Linda University," says Dr. Hopp. The agreement between Loma Linda and HRC will enable occupational and physical therapy students from HRC to receive degrees in health science from Loma Linda University. Japanese administrators estimate that 25 students per year will be enrolled in the program on the Loma Linda campus. According to Dr. Hopp and Ms. Khoo, the need for occupational and physical therapists in Japan is increasing, especially in view of the increasing population of older individuals in Japan. * * * For further information about the agreement between Loma Linda University and Humanitec Rehabilitation College, Yokkaichi, Japan, see the LLU website <http://www.llu.edu/llu/news/today/ may0400/sahp.htm#hrc>.
