The School of Dentistry is usually well represented at the annual meetings of
the American Association of Dental Research. This year was no exception.
Presenting posters and oral research reports were 11 staff, faculty, and students:
Jose F. Torres, assistant professor; James Dunn, DDS, associate professor; Gretchen
Schnepper, fourth-year dental student; Wu Zhang, MD, assistant professor; Shahrokh
Shabahang, DDS, PhD, associate professor; Michele Druan, research assistant;
Carlos Muñoz, DDS, director, Center for Dental Research; Joni Stephens,
MS, EdS, professor, dental hygiene; Sean S. Lee, DDS, assistant professor; Susan
Cartwright, DDS, assistant professor; and Alisa Wilson, project manager/coordinator.
The LLUSD poster presentations were distinctive by being laid out and printed
on poster material that was easily mounted onto poster boards. The intricate
work of printing and preparing the posters was done by staff in the School’s
educational support services department.

School of Dentistry faculty and staff attend 80th annual American Dental
Education Association session
Individuals from the School of Dentistry attended the recent (March
8 to 12) annual session of the American Dental Education Association
(ADEA) held in San
Antonio, Texas.
Several faculty presented programs. They include Joseph Caruso, DDS, MS, MPH,
chair and director, advanced education program in orthodontics and dentofacial

through applied strategic planning; Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MS, dean, “How
to develop an interactive, navigable CD-ROM program”; William Hooker, PhD,
MFCC, associate dean for student affairs, “Update on cultural competency
initiative.”
Others participated as members of various councils of the ADEA, the American
Dental Association, and attended sessions developed for a number of educational
purposes including National Board test item construction, accreditation site
visit training, and workshops of interest.
The annual ADEA session presents an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues
from other schools and programs, and provides a wide array of informative sessions
on how our colleagues handle educational challenges common to every faculty member.
The next ADEA annual session will be held in Seattle, Washington, March 6 to
10, 2004. The dental school administration supports faculty membership in ADEA
by providing reimbursement of dues paid by full-time faculty.
Participants from Loma Linda included Leif K. Bakland, DDS, associate dean, advanced
education, professor and chair, endodontics; Barbara Bostwick, director of development;
Dr. Caruso; Heidi Christensen, DDS, MS, associate professor; Heidi Cooley, assistant
to the dean; Ronald Dailey, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs; Nathan
Dinsbach, third-year dental student; Dr. Goodacre; Marilynn Heyde, assistant
