Loma Linda University Children's Hospital

Stater Bros. and Dreyers Ice Cream hold party for youngsters at Children’s Hospital

As part of Frozen Food Month, representatives from Stater Bros. and Dreyers Ice Cream visited Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for an ice cream social on Friday, March 23. Here, Jack Brown, president and CEO of Stater Bros., talks with his new friend, 5-year-old Raymond Carter. Nine-year-old Brian Pendergast couldn’t stop smiling at all the balloons, the penguin mascott, and his bowl of ice cream—that is, until it was time for another bite of sundae.
Edgar Garcia got lucky: in a room filled with ice cream sundaes and gallons of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, he managed to find an ice-cream-free popsicle. The sticker on his forehead says it all. Jerry Whitmore, vice president of Dreyers Ice Cream, and another Dreyers representative scoop ice cream for countless sundaes during the ice cream social.

New Kiwanis Club formed; Foundation donates $10,000 to Children’s Hospital

The California/Nevada/Hawaii Kiwanis Foundation donated $10,000 to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital on Thursday, March 22.

The gift was given in support of the Children’s Hospital pediatric trauma program. Pediatric trauma is one of many children’s programs that Kiwanis supports. The gift was presented to Norman McBride, MBA, vice president, LLUMC, and Connie Cunningham, administrative director of emergency and trauma services, at the Kiwanis district meeting held at the Radisson Hotel in San Bernardino.

The CA-NEV-HA Foundation benefits four children’s hospitals in California, with special emphasis on prevention.

“Their focus on pediatric trauma gives tremendous support to our program here and has the promise of further benefit to the Children’s Hospital in the future,” says Mr. McBride.

Kiwanis is a worldwide community service organization with more than 300,000 members. Kiwanis clubs accomplish their goals through sponsorship of a wide range of projects. Each club selects its projects depending upon the particular needs of the individual community.

While projects vary from one club to another, representative projects/recipients of support include Children’s Miracle Network, Worldwide Eradication of Iodine Deficiency Disorder, Meals on Wheels, YMCA, Adopt-A-Highway, Special Olympics, and college scholarships.

At the same district meeting, a new Kiwanis Club was chartered to meet the needs of young people in Loma Linda. The new club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Yucaipa. The club currently meets every Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. at the Denny’s Restaurant located just off of Interstate 10 at Alabama Street.
Members of the newly formed Loma Linda Kiwanis Club present a check to the Children’s Hospital. From left are Kurt Meyer, MBA, club president and realtor, ERA Empire Realty; Floyd Petersen, MPH, mayor of Loma Linda and assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the School of Public Health; Mark Hubbard, vice president for risk management, LLUAHSC; Karen Pogue, house manager, Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House; Donna Gurule, MPH, director of hazardous material safety, LLUAHSC; Norman McBride, MBA, vice president, LLUMC; Brian Sabins, loan officer, Community Lending; Sheila Kenny, realtor, ERA Empire Realty; Howard Bennett, administrator, Salvation Army; and Alan Pamintuan, financial advisor, Painne Webber.

“Our membership is growing and we continue to seek men and women who have a heart for helping children,” says Kurt Meyer, MBA, president of the new club. “While our mission is very serious, our goal is to have fun and good fellowship in the process.”

A number of individuals from the University and the Medical Center are charter members of this new club, including Mark Hubbard, vice president for risk management, LLUAHSC; George Johnston, PhD, executive director of administration/risk management; Reiner Roeske, director of the LLUCH Foundation; Mike Cervantes, MSW, clinical social worker in heart transplant and dialysis; Donna Gurule, MPH, director of hazardous material safety, LLUAHSC; and Ron Siagian, associate manager of customer relations for printing services, LLU.

“We are so pleased to be affiliated with the Loma Linda Valley Kiwanis Club and are truly grateful for the generous gift which will purchase equipment vital to the expansion and growth of the Loma Linda emergency department,” Mr. Roeske says.

For information on joining the new club or to attend a meeting as a special guest of the Children’s Hospital, contact Reiner Roeske at extension 88008.

Redlands Police Department brings Easter egg hunt to Children’s Hospital

On Friday, April 13, the Redlands Police Department brought an Easter egg hunt to the units of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.

Police officers and a big white bunny walked from room to room on the units, handing out toys, books, and eggs filled with stickers.

Four-year-old Adrian Gabriel couldn’t get enough of the Easter bunny, touching its ears and asking it questions. When an officer handed him a book about the Easter bunny, he turned to the bunny and said, “That you, bunny?”

Long after the officers had left his room, Adrian’s face would suddenly appear peeking around a corner as he checked to see what the bunny was up to.

The officers visited children on units 4800 and 5800 and acute care.

“It’s heart-wrenching, but it just makes me feel so good,” said Ken Wright, corporal in charge of the Redlands Police Department’s Brookside substation. “There’s got to be people who can come do this for these kids and these families. They need it.”

Cpl. Wright organized the event with the help of fellow officers Karen Caldwell and Alicia Casteneda.
