Bernadine Irwin, PhD, RN, receives Caring Spirit Award

Bernadine Irwin, PhD, RN, associate professor, School of Nursing, was recognized by the Press-Enterprise Company with the Caring Spirit Award. In recognition for her compassion, dedication, and hard work, Dr. Irwin was presented with the award during a special luncheon at the Riverside Convention Center held Tuesday, July 27.

Dr. Irwin is a professor who devotes herself to both her students and her community. Her particular projects are assisting at-risk youth, to try to reduce the influence of gang and gangrelated violence.

Dr. Irwin's work in this area began after she befriended a young troubled teen named Jessica. When Jessica was killed in gang violence, Dr. Irwin understood the need to reach out to troubled youth. She began "Operation Jessica."

Through that project, she has given scores of at-risk youth the opportunity to work with nursing students as mentors and thus to break from the cycle of gang violence. The project invites youths to formulate goals and to develop spiritual values and to know that they are cared about.

In addition, Dr. Irwin selflessly devotes many hours assisting nurses who have addiction problems. She is a member of the California State Board that seeks to both preserve public health and protect the public while also seeking to treat nurses and rescue them for further public service.
