School of Allied Health Professions holds School-wide open house

Director of marketing Chuck Dart, MBA (left), directs prospective students to their program of interest during a School of Allied Health Professions open house held Wednesday, August 6, in Nichol Hall.

The School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) welcomed more than 200 guests Wednesday, August 6, during a three-hour open house for prospective students.

Organized by the School’s marketing department, the open house gave interested individuals a chance to speak with representatives from the eight departments: cardiopulmonary sciences, clinical laboratory science, health information management, nutrition and dietetics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, radiation technology, and speech-language pathology and audiology.

“ All of the departments were pleased with the results of the evening, receiving more prospective students than expected,” says Chuck Dart, MBA, director of marketing, SAHP.

Five sessions of 25 minutes each gave visitors a chance to check out more than one program or department. Representatives in the offices of admissions and financial aid answered questions about transcripts and other application concerns.

Many of the visitors were local community college students interested in attending LLU during the 2004–2005 school year. The open house gave them valuable information on what prerequisite courses they should take this year in preparation for acceptance the following year.

Other visitors were professionals looking to go into different careers or advance in their current fields.

“ Overall, we were excited about the turnout for the open house,” relates Mr. Dart.

Physician assistant class of 2003 presents check at class banquet

During a banquet held Sunday, July 27, the physician assistant (PA) class of 2003 celebrated graduation with faculty, family, and friends.

The 13 members of the class of 2003, physician assistant program, department of cardiopulmonary sciences, School of Allied Health Professions, hosted the dinner to recognize their achievements.

During the evening meal held in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center, students enjoyed sharing memories through PowerPoint presentations, special awards, and tributes to family members.

The evening marked a particularly memorable moment for the physician assistant program. The class of 2003 presented a check of $1,300 to the PA program in support of its development.

Program faculty, staff, and other donors matched the pledges made by the class. Craig Jackson, JD, MSW, dean, thanks and commends the PA class of 2003 for their visionary proposal.

“ This will change the face of alumni involvement,” Dr. Jackson says. “When alumni work together with faculty and administration in planning the development of their School, God will bless, and we can expect unprecedented success.”

As the second class to graduate from the recently established PA program, the class of 2003 has big dreams. They appreciate the excellent education they have received. The skills they learned will provide a strong foundation on which to build their careers. At the same time, they view their fledgling program realistically and look forward to partner with the School in its nurture and growth.

Having just finished the program themselves, class members didn’t have to look far for suggestions to help a great program evolve into an extraordinary one. Some of these include establishing an Alumni Award for students demonstrating outstanding leadership, and providing funds to students for extracurricular professional development opportunities such as attending regional conferences. One other project they feel they could help with is hiring “standardized patients” for objective structured clinical exams.

Planning for longevity of the partnership, the class proposes that project decisions, depending upon available funds, be made each year by an Alumni Philanthropy Advisory Council consisting of alumni, current students, program faculty, and the School’s director of development.

The class of 2003 invites all alumni of the PA program to take an active role in supporting their program’s development.
