School of Public Health to hold obesity seminar
Nearly 30 percent of American children are either obese or at risk of becoming
so. That’s why the School of Public Health office of continuing
professional education is holding a seminar titled “Obesity: Environmental & Genetic
Factors of Childhood & Adolescent Obesity.”
It will take place on October 6, 2003, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Wong Kerlee
International Conference Center. The seminar will bring awareness to the growing
epidemic of obesity in society and illustrate ways individuals can reverse the
dangerous trend.
Five different speakers from around the nation will share their knowledge about
the subject. Key points that participants will learn include: how to identify
factors that contribute to the current epidemic of obesity in children and adolescents;
understand how an obesigenic environment is created by societal influence on
food selection and intake; understand what California State Senate Bill SB19
is and its implications.
Pre-register by September 15, 2003, and pay $145. After that, registration will
be $190, based on space availability. Fees include hand-outs, continental breakfast,
and lunch.

School of Public Health presents grantwriting seminar
Back by popular demand is “Grandwriting: Concepts & Approaches,” a
seminar presented by the SPH office of continuing professional education.
It will be held from September 8 to 10, 2003, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center.
The goal of the workshop is to provide practical skills that will enable the
participant to be competitive in the grants acquisition arena. Individuals will
write and critique key sections of proposals related to projects for which their
agency seeks funding.
Sourcing funds from foundations and corporations plays a significant role in
many non-profit fundraising programs. This three-day course will lead participants
to develop the skills required to research potential funding sources, communicate
with them, and write proposals requesting grants. These skills are fundamental
to any organization in order to increase success in its general operations, productivity,
and fundraising program.
The seminar will be taught by Albin Grohar, PhD, executive director for advancement
at LLU and will help attendees develop the ability to: research potential funding
sources; communicate with potential funding sources; write competitive proposals
requesting grants; and a number of other skills.
