Graduate School administrative offices relocate to West Hall

W. Barton Rippon
Graduate School and School of Pharmacy dean W. Barton Rippon, PhD, enjoys his new office located in West Hall.
Unloading boxes and locating the office furniture are two major activities currently going on in the south wing of West Hall.

The academic and administrative staff of both the Graduate School and the new School of Pharmacy have vacated Griggs Hall and relocated to their new quarters in West Hall.

ÒIt seemed like a logical move,Ó says W. Barton Rippon, PhD, dean of both schools. ÒThis area has already been designated as the location of the School of Pharmacy.Ó

He continues, ÒSince my office as School of Pharmacy dean would be here in West Hall, it made sense to move the Graduate School administrative offices here as well.Ó

The Graduate School recruitment and admissions staff have also moved to West Hall.
In regard to the opening of the School of Pharmacy, Dr. Rippon comments, ÒThe University continues in its commitment to opening the School of Pharmacy.Ó

The difficulty, he explains, continues to be finding high-level church-oriented administrators to run the School.

ÒWe have been receiving numerous inquiries from students about our new pharmacy program,Ó Dr. Rippon continues.

More details about the development of the School of Pharmacy will be available in the coming months as the University moves forward in recruiting faculty and administrators.

Natural sciences professors play major role in science and faith conference

Faculty from Loma Linda University played key roles in the ÒConference on Science and Faith: Symposia and Workshops for Higher Education,Ó held July 23-29 at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan.

ÒThe conference grew out of a General Conference committee that meets every year,Ó says Leonard R. Brand, PhD, professor of natural sciences, Graduate School. ÒThe committee, known as BRISCOøBiblical Research Institute Science Counciløis actually a subcommittee of the Biblical Research Institute.Ó

BRISCO, made up of scientists, theologians, and college science teachers who teach courses dealing with faith and science, meets once a year to discuss issues relating to science and faithøespecially origins, creation, and evolution. BRISCO members include a number of LLU faculty.
ÒThe plan for this year was to have a larger committee,Ó Dr. Brand continues, Òwhere all of the college science teachers would be invited to attend and could share in the discussion.Ó
He adds, ÒThose attending came primarily from North America, but a scattering came from other parts of the worldøBrazil, the Netherlands, and Australia.Ó

Co-sponsored by BRISCO and the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists department of education, the Conference drew nearly 130 attendees and was divided into three days of plenary sessions on design, geology, and origins, as well as sessions on teaching methodology which took place on the following days.

While this yearÕs conference grew out of BRISCO, the Seventh-day Adventist Church used to hold periodic meetings for all of the college teachers, according to Dr. Brand.
ÒThe last such meeting was held in 1976,Ó Dr. Brand remembers, Òand it focused on these origins issues.Ó

LLU faculty taking part in this yearÕs conference include Dr. Brand; H. Paul Buchheim, PhD, professor of natural sciences and coordinator of geology, Graduate School; Ronald L. Carter, PhD, professor and chair of natural sciences, Graduate School; Robert A. Cushman, Jr., PhD, assistant professor of natural sciences, Graduate School; George T. Javor, PhD, professor of biochemistry, School of Medicine; and natural sciences contract teacher Kevin Nick.
