February 8, 2004.
The opening event, a golf tournament, will be held at the Yucaipa Valley Golf
Club at 7:30 a.m. Attendees will learn about current research during scientific
sessions throughout the day. Thursday sessions include topics in endodontics,
prosthodontics, operative/restorative dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery,
and dental hygiene.
Attendees may also visit exhibitors' tables in Wong Kerlee International
Conference Center.
Dentists and dental hygienists, and dental assistants viewing all student table
clinic presentations and completing the table clinic questionnaire will be awarded
two complimentary California continuing education credits.
On Thursday afternoon, alumni will advise junior and senior dental students during
a special student-alumni mentoring session.
The homecoming reception, welcoming back alumni, will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Wong
Kerlee International Conference Center. At 6:00 p.m. during the OKU Society dinner
and business meeting, keynote speaker Rella Christensen, PhD, will present "Current
Trends in Dentistry." The meeting will take place in the School of Dentistry
amphitheater.
Friday, February 6: Exhibitors' tables in Wong Kerlee International Conference
Center will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
On Friday, scientific sessions featuring topics in pediatrics, operative/restorative
dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, and dental hygiene, continue throughout
the day.
The family day reception and tour will begin at 2:00 p.m. According to Kathleen
Moore, MHIS, director, School of Dentistry Alumni Association, the comprehensive
tours of the School provide valuable insight into the organization.
Lisa Beardsley, PhD, MPH, vice chancellor, academic affairs, Loma Linda University,
will be the keynote speaker for the student dedication service, at 4:00 p.m.
in Gentry Gymnasium. During the dedication service the focus turns to the students.
Family, classmates, and friends are invited, and faculty will show support by
marching in academic regalia.
Students will provide special music and Dr. Beardsley will address the students,
calling them to a life of service.
Each first-year student is presented a Bible with his or her name embossed on
the cover, and students in their final year receive a lab coat with their name
embroidered on it. These gifts are provided with Alumni Association funds.
Saturday, February 7: Early Church at Worship begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Gentry
Auditorium, followed by Church at Study at 10:00. A second Church at Worship
service will be held at 11:15.
In the afternoon, Another Peace gospel choir will present a vesper service. Another
Peace is an award-winning gospel choir that will take the audience on a musical
journey from traditional spirituals and anthems, to the "praise and worship" experience
of contemporary urban Gospel music. The choir, founded in 1985, is made up of
students and alumni from both La Sierra and Loma Linda Universities, and is directed
by Alan Woodson, DDS, a 1987 graduate of the School of Dentistry.
Service learning mission trips have been an integral part of the School's
dentistry training program for 50 years. During the service Ronald E. Forde,
DDS, director, service learning, will be joined by students sharing their experiences
providing dental care to people in need locally and around the globe.
The Alumni Student Convention concludes Sunday with a symposium, "Office
Safety and Infection Control."
